Mishra-Naik Talks

Pakistan and India were at the brink of solving a long standing issue of Kashmir when to every one's surprise, there started a Kargil War and everything washed out.

It started with Vajpayee's visit to Lahore in February 99, when both the leaders mutually agreed on solving the long standing Kasmir issue. To nurture the brain child of two leaders Brajesh Mishra and Niaz Naik sat down for a table talk. As a result of negotiations two proposals were finalized.
  1. Division on Religious Basis: Muslim majority areas of Kashmir to be a part of Pakistan. As a result Srinagar will fall to Pakistan and Jammu to India.
  2. Division on Geographical Basis: Areas to the north of River Tawi will be a part of Pakistan and the areas to the south of River Tawi will fall to India. Again Srinagar was to become a part of Pakistan and Jammu to India.
Vajpayee rejected the first proposal and told Mishra to start working on the second one. But no one could have imagined that Pakistan's Army Chief will start a war in Kargil when Srinagar was about to become a part of Pakistan as a result of talks.
